Glossary
- Aluminum Alloy: An aluminium / aluminum alloy is a mixture of chemical elements of which in most cases at least one is a metallic element, in which aluminium (Al) is the predominant metal. Aluminum is softer than stainless steel, its conductivity works well with the heat from LEDs.
- Ambient light / Mood lighting: Providing an element of mood to the environment/setting. Usually soft or colourful lighting options are used to create a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere.
- Battery: power source used to provide energy to your flashlight in order to emit light.
- Battery Capacity: the amount of electric charge a battery can deliver at the rated voltage.
- Bezel: the rim which encompasses and fastens a lens or other object. The ring of a flashlight holding the lens in place.
- Body: exterior structure of an object.
- Candela (symbol: cd) the unit of luminous intensity in the International System of Units. It measures luminous power per unit solid angle emitted by a light source in a particular direction.
- Charging Case: case/cover that not only acts as a housing unit but also charges a device/or a battery.
- Colour temperature: parameter describing the colour of a visible light source by comparing it to the colour of light emitted. Examples: White Light, Yellow Light, Neutral Light.
- EDC (Everyday Carry): or every-day carry is a collection of useful items that are consistently carried on person daily, i.e.: flashlight, pocketknife.
- Flashlight/torch: portable or hand-held source of lighting.
- Flood: how much a light a light source diffuses.
- Headlamp: a flashlight attached to a strap, helmet or other form of headgear for handsfree use.
- Holster: a carrying case/pouch for a flashlight, that can be attached to a belt, shoulder sling, backpack, etc.
- Hz(hertz): is the unit of frequency in the International System of Units, often described as being equivalent to one event (or cycle) per second.
- IPX Waterproof rating: The IPX standard gives you a clearer picture of how water resistant an item is.
- Laser micro-perforated indicators: These indicators in Olight flashlights intuitively show the remaining runtime and throw of your flashlight.
- LED (light-emitting diode): is a semiconductor device that emits a light source with current flowing through it.
- Lens: a transmissive optical device that disperses a light beam by means of refraction. Usually made out of a transparent substance like glass or plastic.
- Lumen(s) (symbol: lm): is the measurement of light output. The unit of luminous flux, a measure of the perceived power of visible light emitted by a source, in the International System of Units. The higher the lumen amount, the brighter the light.
- mAh: a unit of electric charge.
- MCC (Magnetic Charging Cable): signature magnetic charging cable that delivers up to 2A charging current. It also features a USB-C connector.
- Moonlight Mode: flashlight term used to describe the lowest mode of light on a flashlight, soft/dim emitted light source like that of the moon, usually less than 3 (three) lumens.
- Power Bank: a portable battery that allows you to charge electronic devices like flashlights, smartphones, tablets, and laptops on the go.
- Rail Mount: is a system to connect flashlights and various accessories to firearms and certain crossbows. It uses a pair of parallel rails and several slots perpendicular to these rails.
- RoHS: Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS) EU rules restricting the use of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment to protect the environment and public health.
- Runtime: duration of battery life or power source.
- Strobe: rapidly flashing light from a light source that produces a continuous series of short, bright flashes of light. Strobe lighting has the effect of seeming to freeze the movement of objects in motion, this happens because the moving object is only lit up for a fraction of a second.
- Tactical: relating to tactics - such as small-scale actions serving a larger purpose, made or carried out with only a limited or immediate end in view.
- Throw: the distance of the light beam emitted by a light source, how far the light beam travels. We measure this in meters (m).
- TYPE-C Input: USB-C, or USB Type-C, is a 24-pin connector (not a protocol) that supersedes previous USB connectors that provide and receive power in order to charge a flashlight or other devices. It can also carry audio, video, and other data, to connect to monitors or external drives.
- TYPE-C Output: USB Type-C cable supports up to 130W* of power transmission along the same cable for compatible devices This helps power devices like flashlights, cellphones, and tablets and also charge compatible laptops or ultrabooks.
- Type-C USB Charging Cable: USB-C, or Universal Serial Bus Type-C, is a standard connection type for flashlights and other mobile and portable devices. It provides a single reversible connector to transmit both power for charging and data for transfers.
- UV (ultraviolet) Light [a.k.a. black light]: is electromagnetic radiation of wavelengths in the range of 10-400 nanometres (nm), shorter than that of visible light, but longer than that used in X-rays. It is beyond the violet in the spectrum and is largely not visible to the human eye.
- W (watt): is the unit of power or radiant flux in the International System of Units, equal to 1 (one) joule per second.
- Wh: a composite unit of energy equal to one watt sustained for (multiplied by) one hour.
